Police Launch Manhunt After Gunmen Suspected to be IPOB Members Attacked, Killed and Burnt Bodies and Vehicles in Imo

On May 8, 2025, over 20 armed men who were suspected to be members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its militant wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN), launched a coordinated attack along the Okigwe-Owerri Road in Imo State.

The attackers advanced in three groups, setting vehicles ablaze and burning human bodies at various points, including areas between Umuna in Onuimo Local Government Area and Okigwe LGA.

In response, the Nigeria Police Force, in collaboration with the Nigerian Army, Department of State Services (DSS), Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), local vigilantes, and hunters, initiated a manhunt for the attackers.

Imo State Police Commissioner Aboki Danjuma and other security agents visited the attack sites for on-the-spot assessments and are currently combing the area around the scene in search of the attackers.

The attack has evoked general outrage among citizens, who blamed Governor Hope Uzodimma for doing nothing in the face of increased insecurity in the state.

While the police attribute the attack to IPOB/ESN, no group has claimed responsibility, and IPOB reaffirms its stance against participating in violence.
