A Nigerian man, Obinna Onweluzo, has been in prison in India since 2018 without being convicted of any crime. Arrested by Indian police on suspicion of drug trafficking, Obinna says he’s innocent and alleges he was framed.
He stepped forward to assert that the officers who detained him forced him to sign documents written in a language he did not know and tried to coerce him into accepting blame merely to close the case.
Despite the seriousness of the charge, his trial has dragged on for years without conclusion. “I spent more than 6 years behind bars for a crime I didn’t commit. I lost everything—my business, my liberty, and nearly my sanity,” he lamented in a video taken inside the prison compound.

Obinna is reporting that he has corresponded with the Nigerian High Commission as well as other authorities again and again but failed to receive any help.
He also offered voluntarily to relinquish his holdings in Nigeria as a pledge to secure an equitable hearing or be released on bail, yet this never took place.
His tragic story only serves to highlight the consistent example of Nigerians in overseas jails without sufficient legal assistance.
