President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has assured Nigerians that the country’s economy remains strong despite fresh trade tariffs imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump.
Speaking at the Presidential Villa in Abuja when he received members of The Buhari Organisation (TBO) led by former Nasarawa governor Tanko Al-Makura, Tinubu said Nigeria’s growing non-oil revenues and stable fiscal outlook provide confidence against external shocks.
He revealed that the country had already met its 2025 revenue target by August without borrowing from local banks, describing it as a sign of economic progress.

“I can proudly say Nigeria is not borrowing a dime from local banks. We met our revenue target for the year in August, mainly from non-oil sources. If our non-oil revenue is growing, then we have no fear of whatever Trump is doing,” the president said.
Trump, now in his second term, has introduced sweeping trade measures under his “America First” agenda, including a baseline 10 percent tariff on imports and additional country-specific levies. Nigeria was hit with a 15 percent tariff on exports from August, though oil and gas remain exempt.
Tinubu, however, insisted the country is prepared, pointing to reforms in agriculture and mechanization aimed at achieving food security. “If we remove hunger, we have defeated poverty,” he added.
During the meeting, the president also recalled his early political battles with the late Muhammadu Buhari during the formation of the APC, including heated debates over the party’s logo. According to him, Buhari wanted a parliament symbol, while he pushed for the broom, which eventually became the party’s emblem.
The meeting, attended by key APC figures, is seen as part of efforts to strengthen party unity ahead of the 2027 elections.
