Nigerian female icon Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala has been reappointed Director General of the Ngozi Iweala reappointed Director General of World Trade Organization (WTO) for a Second term.
Dr. Mrs. Okonjo-Iweala was first appointed as the 7th Director General of World Trade Organization in March 2021, being the first woman in history to ever hold that position, and the first African to do so.
The 70-years-old icon who hails from Delta State, Nigeria has had a remarkable reputation for herself throughout her life.
She has held several positions of authority both in Nigeria and international bodies.
In Nigeria, she served as the Minister of Finance in the Olusegun Obasanjo led administration, and later as Minister of Foreign Affairs in the same administration.
During the administration of Ebele Goodluck Jonathan, she was reappointed as the Minister of Finance and later as Coordinating Minister of the Economy, a position that was soon abolished.
At the international level, the mother of four and wife to Ikemba Iweala served in the World Bank as a development economist and rose to the No.2 position of Managing Director, Operations, where she held the responsibility of the World Bank’s $81 billion operational portfolio in Africa, South Asia, Europe, and Central Asia; and also spearheaded several World Bank initiatives to assist low-income countries during the 2008–2009 food crises and later during the financial crisis.
She has played a part in many organizations of the world, both Non-Governmental and Government established.
Dr. Okonjo-Iweala also had roles to play in the Global Business Coalition for Education as a Member of the Advisory Board, International Growth Centre (IGC) as Senior Advisor, Mandela Institute for Development Studies (MINDS) as Member of the Advisory Board, Rockefeller Foundation as Member of the Board of Trustees (2008–2018), etc.
In March 2021, she was appointed the 7th Director General of the WTO, after gaining support of the European Union and majority of member nations, and the withdrawal of her Korean competitor Yoo Myung-hee.
It was the then President of Nigeria Alhaji Muhamadu Buhari that nominated her in 2020 for the position.
Today being 29 November 2024, Dr. Mrs. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala was reappointed as the Director General of the World Trade Organization for a second term, due her to great impact, leadership ideals and wisdom.
Her appointment however has enflamed the internet with not just congratulations, but side talks. Most hinting her to be a role model for Nigerian girls who instead, decided to follow Saidaboj on Tiktok as their role model and some feminists.
