Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, who arose as the first female president and Namibia’s fifth leader, has been sworn into power after emerging as the winner of last year’s election. An incredible record.
Namibian Chief Justice Peter Shivute swore Nandi-Ndaitwah in after the outgoing President Nangolo Mbumba had transferred power to her on Friday, during the country’s 35th Independence Day celebration.
Due to heavy downpours, the celebration was moved to the state house from the Independence stadium. Heads of state from various African countries were in attendance, including leaders from South Africa, Tanzania, and Angola.
The atmosphere was filled with jubilation and joy as Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah popularly called NNN, took her oath of office.

Acknowledging her historic election in her inaugural speech, she also stated that Namibians elected her for her competence and merit, including that while the country has seen progress since independence, “there’s a lot that needs to be done.”
Nandi-Ndaitwah won the election late last year by securing 58 percent of the votes, while her closest opponent was 26 percent, in regards to the electoral commission information.
“In the next five years we must produce at least 500,000 jobs,” she said to South Africa’s national broadcaster SABC, acknowledging that it would require the investment of 85 billion Namibian dollars.
The key sectors for job creation, as she stated, include agriculture, the creative and sports industry, and fishing.
Tanzanian President Samia Hassan, speaking during the inauguration, said Namibia is making history by swearing in a female president in Africa, and who happens to be her country’s first female leader, thanked Nandi-Ndaitwah for “setting the bar.”
