The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has uncovered a large-scale operation dealing in expired and falsified drugs in Umumeje village, Osisioma Ngwa, Abia State.
In a statement released on X (formerly Twitter) on Friday, the agency revealed that the illegal operation was being run from multiple buildings near the Ariaria International Market.
According to NAFDAC, expired medicines were being repackaged with altered expiry dates and rebranded for resale, endangering public health.
“Seized items included expired potassium chloride, allergy medications, immune boosters, and cholesterol treatments,” the statement read.

During the raid, officials also discovered machines used to change expiry dates and repackage the counterfeit drugs. Several individuals linked to the operation were arrested, but the prime suspect remains at large.
NAFDAC confirmed that the operation was carried out in collaboration with security agencies as part of the Federal Government’s intensified efforts to combat counterfeit drug circulation in Nigeria.
The agency reiterated its commitment to eradicating substandard and falsified drugs from the market, adding that it is currently reviewing its laws to impose stricter penalties on individuals and organizations involved in the illegal trade of pharmaceutical products.
