According to a report by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has issued a warning across to bakeries about the use of bromate or saccharine during bread production.

The warning was issued out by the Director-General of NAFDAC, Mojisola Adeyeye, who also disclosed that the agency had closed down few bakeries already for using bromate during bread production.

Mrs. Adeyeye said the agency carries out post-market surveillance, to check if some factories are maintaining the same standard they brought while registering with NAFDAC to get approved.

“This is where our post-marketing surveillance comes in.

“We go out routinely to look for certain products; sometimes it may be due to complaints through our reform office.

The Director-General also mentioned that some water production factories had been closed down by NAFDAC due to not meeting the agency’s standard of production, including production in an unhygienic environment.

She pointed out that many factories, after getting approved by NAFDAC, they change the process of production and and start selling out substandard goods.

“We have equally closed down many water-producing factories as a result of substandard production or producing it in an unhygienic environment.

“Our Regulatory Inspection Directorate is important to us because it ensures that what is brought to us at the point of registration is what is still in the market.

“When we do inspection, at the beginning, we go there and take samples and test the product

“Sometimes, after they know that the product has been registered, they start changing the process of production or formula.

It is with respect to these, that the post-market surveillance monitoring proofs its significance to the Agency, where the agency ensures what is brought to them during registration, is still what is in the market in order to maintain standard.

Mrs. Adeyeye calls it “market control.”
