The Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security has introduced a three-day fasting and prayer program for staff members with the aim of invoking divine support to combat Nigeria’s deepening food crisis.

Director of Human Resource Management Adedayo Modupe issued an internal memo dated June 11 confirming the initiative, themed “Divine Intervention for Protection and National Development.” Scheduled for June 16, 23, and 30, each session will run from 12:00pm to 12:30pm in the ministry’s Abuja headquarters, with participants expected to observe fasting before gathering for group prayer.

However, the exercise faced immediate backlash from critics who questioned whether spiritual measures could effectively address practical issues such as food production, inflation, and agricultural insecurity—especially amid alarming reports of farm invasions and record hunger across the nation.

In response to the criticism, the ministry later issued a follow-up memo postponing the program “until further notice,” without offering detailed explanations.

Meanwhile, public frustration over rising food prices and economic stress continues to mount. Despite these spiritual interventions, Nigerians are taking to the streets under protests such as the Take-It-Back movement.

In Abuja on Democracy Day (June 12) and in multiple states, including Lagos, Oyo, and Ondo, citizens demanded urgent government action to tackle hunger, insecurity, and perceived anti-people policies.

One protester in Abuja, Rex Elanu, described the crisis as one where “People are dying of hunger across Nigeria… the government is known for repression… But that will not stop us today.”
