The Minister of Innovation, Science, and Technology, Geoffrey Uche Nnaji, has resigned following allegations of certificate forgery.
His resignation was confirmed on Tuesday by presidential spokesman, Bayo Onanuga, who stated that President Bola Tinubu accepted the decision. “The President thanks him for his service and wishes him well,” Mr Onanuga said.
Nnaji’s exit came after an investigative report by PREMIUM TIMES revealed that he forged both his university and NYSC certificates. The University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), where he claimed to have graduated in 1985, has repeatedly denied issuing him any certificate.

In a fresh letter dated October 6, UNN confirmed that although Nnaji was admitted in 1981, records show he neither completed his studies nor graduated. This marks the third time the university has disowned the minister’s certificate since May.
PREMIUM TIMES reported that Nnaji submitted the forged documents to President Tinubu and the Nigerian Senate during his ministerial screening in 2023. The minister later admitted that UNN never issued him a degree.
The scandal has drawn public outrage, with many calling for accountability. Nnaji, in his resignation letter, claimed he was being blackmailed by political rivals but thanked President Tinubu for the opportunity to serve.
President Tinubu appointed Nnaji as Minister in August 2023.
