The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has issued a stern warning to the Nigerian government, cautioning that the country risks “unimaginable consequences” if anything happens to its detained leader, Nnamdi Kanu.
In a statement on Tuesday, IPOB’s spokesperson, Emma Powerful, accused the Department of State Services (DSS) of endangering Kanu’s life through prolonged detention and denial of adequate medical care.
The group described the situation as reaching “a breaking point,” stressing that any further deterioration in Kanu’s health could spark a crisis with severe implications for Nigeria and the wider region.

“Mazi Nnamdi Kanu is priceless, and no amount of blackmail, judicial rascality, or DSS-induced health crisis will be tolerated,” the statement read. IPOB compared Kanu’s continued detention to historic flashpoints that ignited global conflicts, warning that Nigeria was “sitting on a keg of gunpowder.”
The group also condemned Kanu’s controversial rendition from Kenya in 2021, describing it as a breach of international law and a provocation that could plunge the South-East into chaos. It further accused the British government of complicity, alleging that London’s “neo-colonial interests” emboldened Abuja to keep Kanu in custody.
“If anything untoward happens to Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, Nigeria as presently constituted will cease to exist,” IPOB warned.
Kanu, first arrested in 2015 on treason-related charges, has been in DSS custody since June 2021. Despite multiple court orders for his release or transfer, the government has insisted he remains a security threat.
