Senate President God’swill Akpabio has revealed that many former lawmakers face serious financial difficulties after leaving office, contrary to the widespread belief that they retire rich.
Akpabio made the remark on Wednesday during a plenary session in honor of late Senator Caleb Zagi, who represented Kaduna South from 2007 to 2011 and passed away on June 25 after a brief illness.
The tribute session was initiated by current Kaduna South Senator Sunday Marshall Katung. During the proceedings, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe (Abia South) disclosed that Zagi had reached out to his former colleagues for financial help while battling illness.

Abaribe described Zagi as a humble and selfless public servant who worked across religious and regional lines. He also mentioned that some senators contributed financially to support Zagi’s treatment before his death.
In response, Akpabio commended Abaribe’s gesture and said the incident reflects a harsh reality many ex-senators face. According to him, public perception is misleading, as most lawmakers do not receive lifelong benefits and often leave office with little support.
“Many believe that once you’re a senator, you leave with millions and enjoy life forever. But the truth is, many of our colleagues struggle to meet basic needs after leaving office,” Akpabio said.
Zagi, a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), had earlier served in the House of Representatives before becoming a senator.
The Senate observed a minute of silence in his honor and agreed to send a delegation to condole with his family.
