A devastating flood has claimed at least 151 lives in Mokwa, Niger State, following torrential rains that began late Wednesday, May 28, 2025. The floodwaters submerged over 3,000 homes, displaced thousands, and caused critical infrastructure damage, including the collapse of two bridges and key roads.
Among the victims is Anas Usman, who lost 17 family members when their home in the Kpege community was suddenly engulfed by the floodwaters. “We were preparing to go to the farm in the morning when our house was suddenly submerged by the flood,” Usman recounted.
The Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA) has confirmed the recovery of 115 bodies, with search and rescue operations ongoing. Many victims were swept into the River Niger, and bodies continue to be recovered downstream.

President Bola Tinubu has directed the activation of emergency response measures, including the deployment of relief materials and temporary shelters. He emphasized that no Nigerian affected by the disaster will be left behind.
The flooding has been attributed to a combination of heavy rainfall and the collapse of a nearby dam, exacerbated by climate change and inadequate flood-control infrastructure.
As rescue efforts continue, officials warn that the death toll may rise, with many still missing and entire communities devastated by the unprecedented flood.
