Peter Obi Finally Speaks Out on U.S. Designation and Threat of Invasion

Presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 general election, Peter Obi, has finally expressed deep concern over the recent designation of Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern” (CPC) by the United States, following reports that Washington is considering possible military intervention in West Africa.

In a statement released on his social media account, Obi said the U.S. pronouncement should worry every well-meaning Nigerian, stressing that it reflects the worsening state of insecurity across the country. He cited reports by Amnesty International which estimated that over 10,000 Nigerians have been killed since May 2023, describing the situation as “unprecedented and deeply tragic.”

“The unprovoked and senseless killing of Nigerians is most condemnable, and all efforts must be made to bring it to an end,” Obi said. “This terrible situation was avoidable with competent leadership and prudent governance.”

While acknowledging that insecurity predates the current administration, Obi blamed the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) government for lacking “competence, commitment, and patriotism” to effectively manage the crisis. He accused the government of failing to protect lives and unite the nation.

Obi, however, urged Nigeria and the United States to maintain their longstanding partnership as democracies committed to peace and security. He called for diplomatic engagement between both countries to address the underlying causes of Nigeria’s instability.

“The present situation calls for constructive and urgent cooperation between both nations to restore peace, truth, and justice,” he said.
