Human rights activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore has claimed that some South-East politicians are secretly opposing the release of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), because they believe it could harm their political ambitions.
Speaking on Arise Television’s Prime Time on Thursday, Sowore said certain politicians privately urged the federal government not to free Kanu, fearing it would alter political outcomes in the region—particularly in Imo State.

“I know for a fact that some people in the South-East decided that releasing Nnamdi Kanu would jeopardize their political future. I’ve known this since Tinubu became president,” Sowore said. “I reached out to Soludo, who I know personally (no response. I reached out to Alex Otti, who once wrote for Sahara Reporters) no response. The only feedback I got was that we shouldn’t have mentioned them. I also contacted Peter Obi, but was told he’s in Rome.”
Sowore, who is leading the #FreeNnamdiKanuNow campaign, praised Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe for his courage, recalling that the lawmaker had suffered politically for standing surety for Kanu.
He lamented that while many young Nigerians support Kanu’s release, the region’s political, traditional, and religious leaders remain divided, allowing the federal government to maintain its hard stance.
