JUST IN: "We must stop rigging elections and arming thugs” — Oshiomhole Advises His Colleagues in the Senate and Other Politicians (Video)

Senator Adams Oshiomhole has called on his colleagues and other Nigerian politicians to put an end to election rigging and the arming of political thugs.

The former Edo State governor made the passionate appeal on Wednesday, October 22, during a Senate debate on electoral reforms.

Oshiomhole, who once championed the “One Man, One Vote” campaign in Edo State, warned that electoral corruption and political violence continue to undermine the country’s democracy. He emphasized that true democratic victory comes only when leaders are freely chosen by the people.

“As elected persons, we must not, directly or indirectly, aid or arm anyone to disrupt elections,” he said. “If we reform our character, 90% of these problems will be solved.”

Reflecting on his experience, Oshiomhole lamented how elections have become increasingly violent. “It is now impossible to conduct elections without counting dead bodies,” he noted, stressing that democracy loses its beauty when leaders manipulate results instead of earning the people’s trust.

He also linked post-election violence to the proliferation of arms during campaigns. “After elections, violent crimes rise because politicians who armed unemployed youths fail to retrieve the weapons. Those arms then fuel robberies and insecurity across the country,” he added.

Oshiomhole urged political leaders to uphold integrity in the electoral process and prioritize peace, fairness, and genuine representation over personal ambition.
