Armed men stormed St. Mary’s Papiri Private Catholic Secondary School in Agwara Local Government Area of Niger State in the early hours of Friday, abducting a yet-to-be-confirmed number of students and staff.

Residents said the attackers arrived between 2:00 a.m. and 3:00 a.m., moving swiftly through the school compound before escaping into the bush with their captives. Community members who visited the scene after the incident described it as a well-coordinated attack that threw the area into panic.

Officials of Agwara LGA, including Ahmed Abdullahi Rofia, Head of Disaster and Relief, and Bello Gidi, media aide to the council chairman, confirmed the abductions.

Gidi noted that initial reports suggest a large number of students and teachers were taken but added that the exact figure remains unclear as the school is still reviewing its records. Some residents estimated “more than a dozen,” while others feared the number could be far higher.

Efforts to get an official statement from security agencies have so far been unsuccessful. The spokesperson for the Niger State Police Command, Wasiu Abiodun, said he was still trying to verify details of the attack.

Friday’s incident comes barely five days after terrorists invaded a girls’ school in Kebbi State, kidnapping about 25 students and killing a staff member. It adds to a troubling rise in violent attacks across northern Nigeria, intensifying concerns over the safety of schools in remote and vulnerable communities.
