A 23 years old man identified as Oshen has been declared dead after he got hit with a pestle by a JSS3 student.
The incident happened in Ugboro Secondary School in Bekwara Local Government Area of Cross River state on Tuesday, September 23, 2025.
Ogbeche, a JSS3 student was engaged in a fight with another student named Nicholas when the deceased Oshen, stepped in to separate them.
An eye witness, Lizzy while narrating the incident to some Vanguard correspondents said Ogbeche had accused the deceased of taking sides with Nicholas. The furious Ogbeche feeling cheated left and brought a wooden pestle used in pounding food and rushed towards the Oshen.

“When he picked the pestle, he was told to drop it but he didn’t listen,” Lizzy said.
He went ahead to strike Oshen hard on the head, inflicting severe injuries on the head. Oshen collapsed on the floor. He was immediately rushed to a hospital at Ogoja, where he later died the same night.
“You know the pestles we use here are very heavy, not like the ones you people use in the town. That was why it could inflict severe damage to the head with just one strike,” Lizzy told Vanguard.
The eye witness continued to give information about the assailant, saying, Ogbeche had gotten into several fights before, and that he sometimes attack his fellow students using a matchete but there has never been any casuality up until Tuesday.
The suspect has since been arrested and is being held at Ogoja prison as police continue their investigation.
