INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu

Recently there have been rumors circulating the internet that Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, the sitting Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) chairman is dead.

According to the rumors, the INEC chairman died in a hospital in London.

The Chief Press Secretary to the INEC Chairman, Rotimi Oyekanmi, has however, debunked the rumors, stating that the INEC Chairman is alive, hale and hearty.

“Our attention has been drawn to a fake news narrative circulated by a section of the social media claiming the purported death of the INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu at a London hospital. The story first appeared on Monday, 9th December 2024.

“We hereby appeal to the public to disregard the rumour. Prof. Yakubu is alive, hale and hearty,” Rotimi Oyekanmi said in a statement on Saturday, according to The Punch.

Rotimi also disclosed that the INEC Chairman, against rumors that he was in a London hospital, had not visited London in the last two years, that in fact, he was present at an interactive meeting with the House of Representatives Committee on Electoral Matters on Wednesday, 11th December 2024.

The INEC chairman according to his Chief Press Secretary also chaired the commission’s meeting with Resident Electoral Commissioners on Thursday, 12th December 2024, that both events were widely covered on television and reported on the front pages of most newspapers on Friday 13th December 2024.

Earlier in the week, while the rumors spread, many Nigerians reacted gleefully to the news.

Senator Shehu Sani, a former member of the 8th Senate took to his twitter (X) handle jokingly posting that he saw the ghost of Prof. Mahmood, that it wore white.
