Arrested Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader Nnamdi Kanu appealed to the United States of America and European Union to launch an independent inquiry into what he described as “state-sponsored insecurity” in South-East Nigeria.
Kanu made the call on Wednesday ahead of his trial on April 29, as anxiety mounted over the government’s handling of security lapses in the region.
The IPOB leader requested the same when he met his lawyers on Wednesday to discuss what he claims are strategic moves by the Nigerian government to discredit the image of the group by linking it to a series of recent violent attacks in Imo and Anambra states, according to Kanu’s special lawyer, Aloy Ejimakor.

“Mazi Nnamdi Kanu brought to the forefront matters concerning concerted efforts to falsely link the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) with spurious raids in Imo and Anambra, which he referred to as state-sponsored actions to deflect attention from international campaigns for his release,” Ejimakor said in a statement he shared on X (formerly Twitter) after a meeting with Kanu.
Kanu, who is being held by the Department of State Services (DSS), has since maintained that IPOB is a peaceful movement calling for the self-determination of Biafrans.
His detention and extradition in June 2021 have now been widely condemned by human rights organizations and outside observers.
Ejimakor went on to say, “In reaction, Kanu has asked his lawyers to formally invite the United States and the European Union to carry out an unbiased investigation into the wave of state-sponsored insecurity in Southeast Nigeria.
“The legal team emphasized its resolve to what it had termed a peaceful and lawful search for justice. We are still committed to truth and justice,” Ejimakor underscored.
