The Inspector General of Police in the person of Kayode Egbetokun has pleaded with Nigerians to stop reporting misconducts of police officers on social media.
Egbetokun was speaking at the PPROs/Police Communication Experts’ Conference in Asaba, Delta State, on Monday, when he addressed the issue of citizens posting the outrageous deeds of Nigerian police officers on social media to sabotage the ingenuity and good efforts of the police.
He advised that instead of posting them on social media, police misconducts or any complains should be taken to the Police Misconduct Response Unit. “We appeal to the public not to resort to social media when reporting the conduct of police officers but rather use the Police Complaints Response Unit,” he said.
The Police IG explained that when such are being posted, it is often hard to know the credibility of such information, especially where social media is filled with misinformation. It is rather better to use a platform that provides a more structured and accountable process.
Social media plays a significant role in shaping public opinions, Egbetokun explained, however, the wrong information could influence false perceptions.
He noted that the police make use of the social media, especially when issues of transparency and accountability are spoken of.
In conclusion, he thanked the Governor of Delta State Sheriff Oborevwori for hosting the conference which he says, is part of the police reform to help build public trust and respect.
