At least 20 people were killed Monday night in Bindi village, Ta-Hoss District of Riyom Local Government Area, Plateau State, after gunmen suspected to be armed herdsmen launched a brutal attack on the community.
Eyewitnesses said the attackers stormed the village late at night, going from house to house in what appeared to be a coordinated operation. Among the victims were women, children, and the elderly. Many others were injured while fleeing into nearby bushes.
The Coalition for the Protection of Democracy (COPDEM), in a statement on Tuesday, condemned the killings and described them as a deliberate attempt to displace the indigenous people.
The statement, signed by Chairman Gideon Manjal and Publicity Secretary Gadu Daniel Dong, blamed the attackers—allegedly Fulani militants—for carrying out yet another “well-planned and heartless assault.”

“What happened in Bindi is not random. It follows the same pattern of previous attacks in Riyom and other parts of Plateau,” the group stated.
#COPDEM also criticized the government and security agencies, questioning how such a deadly attack could happen despite the presence of security forces in the area. They said residents had repeatedly alerted authorities about the locations of the suspected attackers, yet no serious action was taken.
“These people are known. Their camps have been reported many times. But nothing is being done,” the statement read.
The group called on President Bola Tinubu and Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang to declare a state of emergency in affected communities and launch full-scale military operations to flush out the attackers. They also urged the government to provide immediate relief for displaced families and rebuild destroyed homes.
“Enough is enough. Our people deserve more than empty condolences,” the group said.
