Renowned Ijaw leader and former Federal Commissioner for Information, Chief Edwin Kiagbodo Clark, has passed away at the age of 97. His family confirmed his death in a statement released on Tuesday.
According to the statement signed by Professor C. C. Clark on behalf of the family, the elder statesman died on Monday, February 17, 2025.
“The Clark-Fuludu Bekederemo family of Kiagbodo Town, Delta State, wishes to announce the passing of Chief (Dr.) Sen. Edwin Kiagbodo Clark, OFR, CON, on Monday, February 17, 2025,” the statement read.

Born in Kiagbodo, Delta State, Clark had his early education in Effurun, Okrika, and Afugbene before proceeding to the Government Teacher Training College, now Delta State University, Abraka. He briefly worked as a school teacher before traveling abroad to obtain a law degree.
A key figure in Nigeria’s political landscape, Clark served in the administrations of military governor Samuel Ogbemudia and Head of State General Yakubu Gowon between 1966 and 1975. He was appointed a member of an advisory committee to the military governor of the Mid-Western Region, David Ejoor, in 1966, and later became the Federal Commissioner for Information in 1975.
Until his passing, Clark was the leader of the Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF), an organization committed to fostering inter-ethnic harmony and security in the Niger Delta region.
His death marks the end of an era for the Ijaw nation and Nigeria as a whole.
