The Nigerian Army has complained over the unenthusiasm shown by youths in the country’s southeast region in the ongoing recruitment process.
The alarm was raised by Brigadier General Chima Ekeator, who is leading the Army’s 2025 recruitment awareness campaign in Abia State, stating that the slots meant for the southeast have not been filled.
It is reported that in the last recruitment year, out of 200 slots for Enugu State, only 58 were filled. This is the same in other states of the region.

Brig. Gen. Ekeator reiterated the importance of educating young people about the opportunities within the Army and their crucial role in national security.
He pleaded with the state governments and traditional rulers, local government councils, mayors, and student union leaders to help persuade the youths to pick up recruitment forms and fill up the slots for their states and also praised the state government for their efforts during this year’s recruitment process.
Pastor Caleb Ajagba, who represented the state governor, Alex Otti, while speaking, promised the army that the state would establish outreach programs to engage youths more effectively.
He also highlighted the importance of security in the region, assuring the army that continuous efforts would be made to make sure the youths see reasons to enroll in the army.
