House of Representatives member Bello El-Rufai, son of Nasir El-Rufai, has confessed to misjudging former President Goodluck Jonathan, calling his past criticism naive and attributing his changed stance to a profound moment of clarity.
During a Thursday interview on Channels Television, the Kaduna North lawmaker recounted how his perspective shifted after observing his father, ex-Governor Nasir El-Rufai, seeking Jonathan’s counsel. “I told my father that when he sees Jonathan, he should please tell him I’m very sorry, that I’m wiser now,” Bello said, acknowledging that he had failed to appreciate the complexities of governance in his youth.
Reflecting on the incident, he added, “I even forgot in my naivety, as many young people do, that we had governance then, and I found my father saying that he is going to consult President Jonathan… I said, ‘Please… tell him I am very sorry; I am wiser now.’” Bello defended Jonathan’s grace in conceding elections, calling it a rare act of democratic maturity, especially in the African context.

Elected in 2023, Bello has previously taken nuanced positions on his father’s legacy—supporting non-partisan probes into his tenure while warning against politically motivated witch-hunts. He also stated he was never personally involved in contract awards during Nasir El-Rufai’s administration.
On electoral reforms, Bello cautioned against rumor-fueled changes like voting without PVCs but endorsed measures such as electronic result transmission to enhance credibility.
In his reflections, Bello El-Rufai models political maturity and introspection, urging Nigerians to respect democratic processes and leaders who step down gracefully.
