Popular Nigerian veteran gospel singer Dr. Panam Percy Paul has revealed how he rejected a whopping £24 million record deal in 1995 because he didn’t want to stop mentioning ‘Jesus’ in his songs.

The artiste disclosed this during an interview session with Pastor Emmanuel Iren while speaking about the commercialization of gospel music that has become the norm these days.

According to Panam Percy Paul, the £24m deal (N7 billion then) was supposed to be for three years. He was asked to minimize the use of ‘Jesus’ in his songs and use other names like ‘Righteous One’ or ‘Greatest Lover’; however, he refused.

He said he chose the name over the money, saying, “The catch was, ‘Can you reduce the number of times you call the name Jesus in your songs?

“One of them even said, ‘You don’t actually need to mention Jesus. You can call Him other names.’ I was shocked, so I told them, ‘You can keep the money while I keep the name,’” he recalled.

He compared his experience and choice then to what is the norm now, saying, “Today, the extreme is that the music ministry has now become a music industry,” he lamented. “The industry now dictates to the ministers what to do, how to sing, and when to sing.”

His statement has sparked reactions from netizens, with many commending him for his true stance towards the gospel of Jesus and not allowing himself to be swayed by money.

Dr. Panam Percy Paul is one of Nigeria’s most celebrated gospel musicians. His music career spans 40 years.
