Bashir El-Rufai, son of former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, has dismissed the concept of “One Nigeria,” arguing instead for regional autonomy as the only sustainable path to national stability.
In a post on his X handle, Bashir said Nigeria’s persistent “blame games” between regions would end if citizens could hold leaders within their own zones directly accountable.
“Regional autonomy can easily solve this situation,” he wrote, describing the unity project as “esoteric” and unconvincing.

The younger El-Rufai also took a swipe at President Bola Tinubu, using the nickname “Escobar,” a reference critics employ to allude to Tinubu’s controversial links to a 1990s U.S. drug case in which he forfeited $460,000.
While Tinubu was never convicted, opponents have repeatedly drawn comparisons to Colombian drug lord Pablo Escobar.
Bashir’s comments echo an old stance attributed to Tinubu himself, who was once quoted in a 1997 ThisDay report as saying, “I don’t believe in One Nigeria.”
His latest remarks continue a pattern of sharp criticism. In past posts, he mocked Tinubu, predicted Peter Obi could unseat him in 2027, and warned against any move to arrest his father.
