Abia State Governor Alex Otti has disclosed plans to transform the former Government House built by ex-Governor Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu into a five-star hotel, citing its poor condition and unsuitability for official use.

Located at Ogurube Layout in Umuahia, the facility was described by the State Commissioner for Information, Okey Kanu, as structurally unsafe and largely incomplete. During a recent inspection, Kanu pointed out that the building lacks basic features expected of a functional Government House.

“There are no wardrobes, just empty halls. Only the first floor seems complete; the rest is unfinished, with many areas not even plastered. The elevator was never installed,” he said.

Kanu further criticized the construction as hastily done for public show, claiming it was never genuinely intended for government residence. He noted that the upper floors are empty and pose serious safety risks, with parts of the building potentially hazardous.

“This structure was built more for appearance than function. It’s unsafe and doesn’t meet the standards of a Government House. Governor Otti cannot allow such waste of public funds to continue,” he added.

He also dismissed reports that the previous Government House was rented, affirming that the Otti administration aims to repurpose the abandoned structure for economic value.

The conversion is part of the current government’s broader agenda to revamp state infrastructure and maximize utility of existing assets.
