FRSC Operatives Needs to be Armed — FRSC Corps Marshal

The Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Shehu Mohammed, has said arming operatives might be necessary to effectively enforce traffic regulations across Nigerian highways.

Speaking on ARISE News on Thursday, Mohammed highlighted the dangers faced by road safety patrol teams, particularly when dealing with heavy-duty trucks and tankers that often carry both goods and passengers.

“How do you stop a trailer or tanker on the road? Some carry over 100 passengers along with animals, and you only have four personnel on patrol. How do you enforce the law in such situations?” he asked.

He argued that without what he described as “the power of cohesion,” the Corps’ ability to enforce compliance remains limited.

Responding to concerns about bribery and extortion among operatives, the FRSC chief admitted the problem exists but stressed that the Corps has been stricter than many other agencies in disciplining offenders. “We have more records of termination and dismissal of personnel over bribery and corruption,” he noted.

On complaints about driver’s licence fees, Mohammed clarified that the official charges remain unchanged at ₦15,000 for three years and ₦21,000 for five years.

He also apologised to Nigerians over difficulties in processing licences, assuring that by early October, the Corps will roll out an improved system for faster and more efficient service delivery.
