Aloy Ejimakor, Special Counsel to the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, according to a report by SaharaReporters, has warned President Bola Tinubu that the South-East will not support his administration unless Kanu is released.
Ejimakor made the statement during an interview on Symfoni, an online TV platform. He argued that denying citizens the right to peaceful protest undermines democracy, insisting that justice demands Kanu’s immediate release.
“I have won three cases in favour of Nnamdi Kanu—at the Abia State High Court, the Federal High Court in Umuahia, and the Enugu State High Court,” Ejimakor said. “The South-East has been politically marginalised since the end of the civil war. Any genuine discussion about the region must begin with the release of their leader.”

He recalled that Labour Party’s Peter Obi had earlier urged the government to stop Kanu’s prosecution. “The decision lies with President Tinubu,” Ejimakor added. “If he refuses to release Kanu, he should forget about winning votes from the South-East.”
Ejimakor’s comments came shortly after he was brutalised and detained by the police during a peaceful protest in Abuja on October 20. Following his release on bail, he revealed that he now relies on an inhaler due to injuries sustained during his arrest.
Despite multiple court rulings ordering Kanu’s release, the federal government has continued to hold him, drawing criticism from activists, including Omoyele Sowore, who has vowed to keep protesting until justice is served.p
