Former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has dismissed the idea of a one-term presidency as proposed by Labour Party’s former presidential candidate, Peter Obi. He argued that four years is not enough to tackle Nigeria’s challenges or achieve meaningful reforms.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, El-Rufai, who is now a member of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), said Nigerians do not take such pledges seriously because they are impractical.
“On the question of people saying they will come out and do one term, I don’t think anyone believes them, and I don’t think it’s right,” he stated.

The former governor explained that while the constitution already sets a two-term limit, voluntarily limiting a presidency to four years only weakens the ability to deliver results. He pointed out that both Peter Obi and former Rivers State governor, Rotimi Amaechi, who once made similar commitments, should know from their time as governors that governance requires continuity.
“As someone who has been governor for eight years, I can say clearly that four years is not enough. Amaechi and Obi know the time it takes to make real impact,” he said.
El-Rufai urged political leaders to avoid making promises Nigerians see as unrealistic, stressing that genuine reforms in a country as complex as Nigeria demand patience, long-term planning, and consistent execution.
His comments come as Peter Obi renews his popularity with his pledge to serve only one term if elected president—a promise El-Rufai insists is neither believable nor practical.
