The Federal Government of Nigeria has declaimed rumors circulating on the internet that it has scrapped out Junior Secondary School (JSS) and Senior Secondary School (SSS) system of education for a 12-year unrestricted basic education system.
Director of Press of the Federal Ministry of Education, Folashade Boriowo, during a press briefing explained that the Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa did not say the government would scrap out the JSS and SSS system, however, it only wished to eliminate the barriers that exist between the transition from JSS to SSS classes.
“The attention of the Federal Ministry of Education has been drawn to misleading reports suggesting that the Federal Government has scrapped Junior Secondary School (JSS) and Senior Secondary School (SSS) and replaced them with a new 12-year uninterrupted basic education model. We wish to categorically state that this is not true.

“The new proposal is rather a 12-year continuous education that will still maintain the 6-3-3 structure. Its purpose is to eliminate the barriers that seem to exist in the JSS and SSS sections,” he said.
He went further to add, “This will allow for a seamless transition of students without the hurdles of an external assessment at that stage. However, this is still a subject of consultation and deliberation”.
The necessary stakeholders will have to, sit and deliberate on the issue before a conclusion will be drawn.
“The final decision on whether to adopt this reform will be made at the October 2025 National Council on Education Meeting”, the statement read.
In the statement, he encouraged the masses not to heed the rumor.
“The Ministry urges the public to disregard the false claim that JSS and SSS have been scrapped. The Federal Government remains committed to policies that enhance access to quality education while aligning with global best practices,” read the statement.
