The Federal Government says it will not proceed with the extradition of separatist agitator Simon Ekpa until legal proceedings against him in Finland are concluded.

Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice Lateef Fagbemi disclosed this while speaking at a public event in Abuja. He explained that the offences tied to Ekpa go beyond Nigerian borders and fall under Finnish jurisdiction as well.

“Finland must first complete its legal process before Nigeria can take further steps,” Fagbemi said, emphasizing that the Nigerian government remains committed to pursuing the case once Ekpa is cleared for extradition.

Ekpa, who has been linked to the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), is accused of actions the government considers disruptive to Nigeria’s peace and unity.

The Justice Minister also cited Nigeria’s recent successes in international legal cooperation. He referenced the extradition of Hassan Bun Hussein Abolore Lawal and Okechukwu Josiah Odunna to the United States, as well as the return of Benjamin Nnanyereugo, also known as Killaboi, from Qatar in April to face murder charges.

Between December 9 and 13, 2023, the Ministry reportedly secured 226 terrorism-related convictions from over 230 prosecuted cases.

To strengthen its legal response to digital threats, the government has also set up a dedicated team to tackle cybercrime and improve inter-agency collaboration.
