A Senior Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu, Temitope Ajayi, has caused an uproar on the Nigerian media for proposing a “capital punishment,” which is interpreted as a “death sentence,” to the female corps member who called Tinubu a terrible president.

A female National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member identified as Ushie Ruth Raye has been trending over a video she made calling out the Tinubu-led administration over the cost of living in the country and how corps members are struggling with the meager allowances they get, which does not reflect the current economic realities; that Tinubu is a “terrible” president.

Ruth’s video sparked outrage in the country, as many have argued that she shouldn’t criticize the government while serving in its most cherished agencies. Others applauded her for her boldness, saying she simply spoke the truth.

A lot of Nigerians condemned her for calling President Tinubu a terrible president. She was also called by NYSC officials and threatened to bring down the post.

Temitope Ajayi, took to his social media handle to condemn the corps member’s acclaimed insult to the president, pointing out that as a serving corps member, she cannot abuse the president or any public official.

Ajayi stated that Ruth had violated her oath and code of conduct of the NYSC, and should be served a “capital punishment” under NYSC. Adding that she should be punished to the “fullest extent” and not just warned.

He also termed the corps member’s actions “blant and egregious infractions,” which the country must not gloss over.

The president’s aide’s post sparked reactions on the internet, with many interpreting his “capital punishment” as “death sentence”. Even though he made another post to explain his context, the previous message already had its full impact.

A lot of netizens have accused him of proposing a death sentence for a corps member who only exercised her fundamental human right.

A Capital Punishment is a Death Sentence, though he said “under NYSC”, but a word like “capital punishment” was too heavy to be overlooked. Whether as a metaphor, it implies a death sentence.
