The U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) have at the same time requested a 90-day waiting period to make available information on Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
This follows a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) lawsuit brought by investigative journalist David Hundeyin, demanding access to records that would make available to the public Tinubu’s alleged link to a drug smuggling case in the early 1990s in the United States.
The agencies, in a filing to a U.S. District Court, cited the necessity of extra time to review and process the massive records. The records are reported to be pertaining to a narcotics operation in Chicago, where Tinubu was reported to be involved in the proceeds of heroin trafficking.

Although Tinubu has before denied any wrongdoing, the scandal over these allegations has persisted. According to the FOIA request, case files, financial transaction reports, and other law enforcement investigation documents can be the requested records.
The court is likely to decide the extension request shortly, and with the approval, agencies will have until late July 2025 to comply.
The wait has initiated fresh talk in Nigerian politics, especially with Tinubu coming under the spotlight. Most Nigerians and political commentators anxiously await the decision, which could have a bearing on his administration and international reputation.
There has been no official statement yet from President Tinubu or the Nigerian government over the current legal struggle in America at the time of this publication.
