Family Calls Off Wedding in Last Hour Because Wife-To-Be Refuses to Address 11-year-old Fiancé's Sisters as 'Aunty'

A wedding scheduled to hold today September 21, 2025 was abruptly cancelled after a heated disagreement between the bride-to-be and her fiancé’s family over how she should address younger relatives.

The story was shared by Facebook user, Adefemi Taiwo Damilola (though with a first-person pronoun). She revealed that the mother-in-law insisted she must call her fiancé’s nieces (aged 11 and 15) “aunty” as a mark of respect.

The wife-to-be who is 29-year-old and a master’s degree holder, said she found the demand humiliating, arguing that it was unreasonable to call children far younger than her by such titles.

According to her, the situation escalated when she addressed the girls by their names and in Yoruba language with “O” instead of “E,” which her mother-in-law considered disrespectful.

The bride-to-be explained that despite her attempts to remain respectful, the family insisted she comply or the marriage would be called off.

When her fiancé supported his mother’s stance, Damilola said she refused to “pretend” or “suppress her pride.” The mother-in-law eventually informed the extended family that the wedding was cancelled.

“I can’t call someone I’m 15 to 20 years older than aunty,” Damilola wrote in a statement. “That’s not pride, it’s just self-respect. I’ve always been respectful, but I won’t subject myself to such humiliation.”

Her fiancé has since blocked her on social media, and she says she is focusing on healing and moving forward.
