Ekweremadu’s Wife Released from UK Prison, Returns to Nigeria

Beatrice Ekweremadu, the wife of Nigeria’s former Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, has regained her freedom from a UK prison and is now back in Nigeria.

A former aide to Mr. Ekweremadu confirmed her release in a conversation with journalists on Wednesday. “Yes, she’s released now. She is currently in Nigeria,” the aide revealed, while remaining anonymous.

Beatrice was convicted alongside her husband and a medical doctor in March 2023 after a UK court found them guilty of organ trafficking. The Old Bailey court in London ruled that they facilitated the travel of a young man to Britain with the intent to exploit him.

Following their trial, Ike Ekweremadu was sentenced to nine years and eight months in prison, while Beatrice received a four-year, six-month sentence.

The release has raised eyebrows as Beatrice has not fully served her jail term according to the initial court ruling. However, the former aide declined to provide specifics about whether her early release was tied to a pardon or other legal considerations. “I don’t have that information. But she’s out means she’s out finally. She will not go back to the UK,” the aide insisted.

The case remains a significant topic of discussion in Nigeria, as the circumstances surrounding her release and return to the country continue to generate curiosity and speculation.
