EFCC Arrests Former Governor of Akwa Ibom, Deac. Udom Emmanuel, Over Alleged N700 billion Embezzlement

Former Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Deacon Udom Emmanuel, has been arrested by the Economic Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) after he honored an invitation sent to him by the institution.

A petition was submitted to the EFCC concerning misappropriation of state funds during his 8-year tenure as the Governor of Akwa Ibom State, from 2015 to 2023.

The petitioners alleged that Emmanuel received N3 trillion from the Federal Government allocation in his entire 8 years in office; however, some part of the money amounting to N700 billion has not been accounted for.

Deac. Emmanuel left a debt profile of N500 billion, leaving office as governor, and unpaid ongoing projects worth N300 billion.

The EFCC has arrested the former governor in order to probe him for the allegations labeled against him according to the petition.

Last weekend, Udom Emmanuel was seen together after a very long time with the Senate President, God’swill Akpabio, shaking hands in a very friendly manner during a meeting with the Executive President, Bola Tinubu, in Aso Rock.

The two became enemies a year after God’swill Akpabio handed the batten to Emmanuel, whom he brought up from Zenith Bank to take over from him as governor, with reasons that Emmanuel betrayed him.

In his words, Akpabio said their agelong enmity has come to an end, as they have reconciled. The current Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Pastor Umo Eno, was present as the three Akwa Ibom State stakeholders exchanged pleasantries with President Bola Tinubu.

Since his arrest by the EFCC, a video of the former governor boasting that he can never take the state’s money has been circulating the internet.

Criticisms have been directed towards Udom Emmanuel’s administration for spending so much money to build industries that are not currently functioning and a huge worship center when the state is rated as one of the highest with youth unemployment, despite being an oil-rich state receiving the highest federal allocations after Rivers State.
