Governor Francis Nwifuru of Ebonyi State has announced a ban on the activities of house and land agents in the state, effective January 1, 2026.
The governor said the decision was taken to curb exploitation in the real estate sector and reduce the rising cost of accommodation. He accused agents of charging excessive fees (sometimes as high as ₦500,000) just to show prospective tenants properties that do not belong to them.
“This exploitation must stop. From 2026, no agent should collect money from anyone seeking accommodation in Ebonyi State,” Nwifuru declared.

The move has generated widespread reactions, with many residents welcoming it as a step toward making housing more affordable.
It also aligns with ongoing efforts by the State House of Assembly, which has been deliberating on laws to regulate landlords and ease the burden of rent on low- and middle-income earners.
According to the government, the ban is aimed at ensuring fairer access to housing, lowering rental costs, and eliminating exploitative middlemen from the system.
