Report reaching Igbo Tv has it that, a Zambian Policeman identified as Detective inspector Titus Phiri, in a drunken binge, unlocked prison cells and freed 13 suspects from Leonard Cheelo police station in the capital, Lusaka, saying they should go and celebrate new year.
A manhunt has been launched for the 13 suspects who are now on the run. While Mr. Phiri has been arrested for further questioning.
According to the report, officer Phiri forcibly seized cell keys from from constable Serah Banda on New Year’s Eve, and went and released 13 suspects out of 15, both male and females who have been convicted of crimes such as assault, robbery and burglary.

“Mr. Phiri in a state of intoxication, forcibly seized cell keys” from constable Serah Banda on New Year’s Eve.
“Subsequently, detective inspector Phiri unlocked both the male and female cells and instructed the suspects to leave, stating they were free to cross over into the new year,” he said.
“Out of the 15 suspects in custody, 13 escaped. Following the incident, the officer fled the scene,” Police spokesperson Rae Hamoonga said.
