Don’t Lose Hope: The Journey to a Better Nigeria
The Presidential Election Petition Tribunal will deliver its judgment today. Once that happens, it’ll be a “Long Walk To Freedom.” Don’t be discouraged.
Regardless of the outcome of today’s judgment, we must not lose hope. We must keep believing that a New Nigeria is possible.
It’ll be a “Long Walk To Freedom,” and we have begun the “Walk.”
Good governance does not come on a platter of gold. It takes commitment, not just from the elective office holders but from the electorate.
It takes informed citizens to drive good governance.
And for us to achieve this, we must understand that governance is a continuum.
It’s time to reengineer our attitude toward governance.
You don’t cultivate your farmland and expect good crops to grow. Neither do you plant corn in the farmland, hoping it’ll grow uninterrupted.
No, you cultivate, plant, and nurture before you can have a good harvest.
Cultivating, planting, and nurturing are what give birth to good governance. And you repeat them for another tenure.

But when you cultivate and relax, you’re obviously inviting weeds.
When you cultivate and plant without nurturing, you’ll only reap corruption and incompetent leadership.
Sadly, in Nigeria, we’ve been cultivating (campaigning), planting (voting) without nurturing (holding electorates accountable and recalling erring representatives), yet expecting good fruit.
Governance doesn’t start with campaigning and end with voting. It’s a “continuum.”
Governance is a recurring process: Campaign, Election, Governance, and Election again.
Imagine if we can stay woke for the next four years?
Imagine if we can explore our collective civil rights to demand that the National Assembly recall erring, incompetent officeholders?
The momentum must remain strong. We must champion this fight through all the stages of governance.
The current political wave has proven that true power belongs to the people. It may not be perfect, but we cannot deny that we’ve made progress.
It’ll be a “Long Walk To Freedom,” and we have begun the “Walk.”
