A member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has accused officers of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) of extorting N30,000 from her brother in Karu, Abuja.

The corper, who shared the incident on X, said her brother was stopped at an abattoir while returning from playing a game. Despite finding nothing incriminating after searching his phone, the officers allegedly demanded N100,000 for his release.

According to her, her brother was forced to sit on the ground under a tree before she arrived. She claimed the officers refused to acknowledge her NYSC ID card and instead insisted on payment.

“They asked for N100k, but after bargaining, it came down to N30k. I had to withdraw the money from a POS and pay. Even after that, one of them demanded I buy him a beer,” she wrote.

The corper said she refused to hand over her own phone when requested, insisting she was neither recording nor taking pictures.

She quoted one of the officers as saying, “He is a suspect. I am only favouring you and your brother for collecting 30k.”

The report has sparked outrage online, with many Nigerians condemning the SARS officers for allegedly preying on innocent citizens instead of protecting them, while calling on authorities to fish out the criminals.
