Women of Oviri Olomu community in Delta State have declared a sex strike to protest ongoing attacks by suspected herdsmen in their area.
Over 50 women from the Ughelli South Local Government Area stormed the Ughelli Area Command of the Nigeria Police on Tuesday, demanding urgent action. They say their once peaceful farming community has been turned into a nightmare, with cases of rape, kidnapping, and destruction of farmland by armed herders.
In a bold move to draw attention to their plight, the women announced they would withhold sex, food, and participation in market activities until their safety is guaranteed.

“They rape our women; they chase us from our farms. Our husbands can’t go to the bush anymore. Enough is enough,” said Esther Monday, a community woman leader. “Until the government acts, no food, no sex, no peace.”
Austin Etata, a former Secretary General of the community, confirmed the strike and said the women’s demands are clear and serious. “Our people are being pushed to the edge,” he said. “The herdsmen now rule the bush paths. They destroy crops and threaten anyone who speaks up.”
Emmanuel George, Vice President of the community, added that the herdsmen have grown bold and now lay claim to the land. “They even threaten to kill our women when they beg for peace,” he said.
The protesters are urging Governor Sheriff Oborevwori to enforce the state’s anti-open grazing law and restore calm to their community.
Responding to their complaints, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Ughelli ‘A’ Division promised immediate attention and a peace meeting between community and Fulani leaders.
“We hear you,” the DPO assured. “We’ll take the necessary steps to bring back peace.”
