Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State has officially dumped the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), following months of speculation and political consultations.
The announcement was made on Friday during a press briefing at the Government House in Uyo, where Governor Eno said his decision came after “three months of wide consultation” with political stakeholders, traditional rulers, and community leaders across the state.
Expressing appreciation to the PDP for the platform it provided him, Eno described his defection as a “progressive move” intended to align Akwa Ibom with the federal government under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. He emphasized that the switch was not out of political desperation but a strategic decision made from “a position of strength.”
“We are joining the APC not out of weakness but out of a strong desire to support Mr. President’s Renewed Hope Agenda and to ensure Akwa Ibom State is well-positioned to benefit from federal development plans,” Eno said.

The governor also stated that his loyalty remains with the people of Akwa Ibom, vowing to continue working for the state’s progress regardless of party lines.
Eno’s defection was witnessed by top APC chieftains and governors, including Imo State Governor and Chairman of the Progressives Governors Forum, Hope Uzodimma, as well as Governors Babajide Sanwo-Olu (Lagos), Dapo Abiodun (Ogun), Francis Nwifuru (Ebonyi), Lucky Aiyedatiwa (Ondo), Bassey Otu (Cross River), and Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, a PDP member whose presence has sparked fresh political debates.
Governor Eno also pledged support for the former governor of Akwa Ibom State, now Senate President of Nigeria, Senator God’swill Akpabio, describing him as a “key figure” in Nigeria’s national politics and a unifying force for Akwa Ibom’s development aspirations.
Taking to his social media handle, Senator God’swill Akpabio welcomed Umo Eno to the APC fold. He wrote; “It is with utmost joy that I received our governor, Pastor Umo Eno PhD, his deputy, Akon Eyakenyi, All Progressives Congress Governors led by the chairman of the Forum, Hope Uzodimma and other stakeholders of our party, at my residence in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, after the historic defection of my brother, Governor Eno, members of the State Executive Council, Federal and State lawmakers, as well as council chairmen into the Progressives’ family. Thank you Mr Governor for having the interest of our people at heart. Congratulations and welcome to the fold.”
