A court in Khartoum, Sudan, has reportedly sentenced a pregnant woman to death by hanging for apostasy.
The sentence would be carried on after the child is two-years-old, reports Aljazeera.
The pregnant woman identified as Mariam Yahya Ibrahim Ishaq who claimed she was born an Orthodox Christian was also charged with adultery for marrying a Christian man from South Sudan, and would receive 100 lashes of cane.
Her marriage to a Christian South Sudanese is termed adulterous because under Sudan’s version of Islamic law, Muslim women cannot marry non-Muslims
The 27 year old pregnant Mariam claimed in her defense that she did not leave Islam for the Christian faith, she has always been a Christian. Though she was born to a Muslim father who has been absent throughout her childhood, she was raised by a Christian mother.

Yet, the court claims she converted from Islam to Christianity, and are punishing her for it.
Mariam was given three days to recant, that is denounce Christianity and return to Islam or face the court sentence.
Speaking about the case with Aljazeera, Khalid Omer Yousif, the pioneer of Sudan Change Now Movement, confirmed the judgment, stating that despite the woman saying she has always been a Christian, she was still sentenced to death by hanging for Apostasy and 100 lashes for marrying a Christian man.
Khalid Yousif pointed out that, Sudan is currently experiencing an oppressive regime, that many have been sentenced in this manner, using the criminal law that was issued in 1991.
In one of the articles, the people must be prevented from changing their religion and sentenced to death if they do so.
According to BBC, her lawyers are planning an appeal to a higher court to get the sentence overturned
