Nigerian activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore has sharply criticized President Bola Tinubu for commissioning only 30 kilometers of the proposed 700-kilometer Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, labeling the act as a “treasonable felony.”
In a statement shared on social media, Sowore argued that inaugurating an incomplete infrastructure project is emblematic of the persistent failures and manipulations of the Nigerian political class. He emphasized that such actions should be treated as criminal offenses without a statute of limitations.

“To maintain transparency and accountability, it should be unlawful to initiate road construction projects with a ‘flag-off’ ceremony or to ‘commission’ unfinished projects anywhere. Perpetrators should face criminal charges,” Sowore stated.
The Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway project, estimated to cost around ₦15.6 trillion, has faced criticism from various quarters. Former President Olusegun Obasanjo described it as wasteful and corrupt, while former Vice President Atiku Abubakar questioned the lack of competitive bidding in awarding the contract to Hitech Construction Company Limited, owned by Gilbert Chagoury, an ally of President Tinubu.
Despite the controversies, the Federal Government maintains that the project will enhance connectivity and boost economic activities along Nigeria’s coastal regions.
