The Catholic Diocese of Awka, Anambra State, is in mourning following the sudden passing of Reverend Father Anthony Nnaemeka Udogu, who died while playing lawn tennis on Monday morning.
Fr. Udogu, who served as the Parish Priest of St. Francis Parish, Awka, and Dean of the Awka II Deanery, reportedly collapsed in the middle of the game. He was quickly rushed to a nearby hospital, but all medical efforts to revive him proved unsuccessful.
The tragic incident was confirmed in a statement issued on Tuesday by the Chancellor of the Diocese, Rev. Fr. Charles Ndubisi. The Church expressed deep sorrow over the loss of the devoted cleric.

“With hope in the resurrection, we announce the death of our brother, Rev. Fr. Anthony Nnaemeka Udogu, who passed away suddenly on Monday, May 19,” the statement read.
Born on December 24, 1964, Fr. Udogu was ordained a priest on August 19, 1995. Until his untimely death, he remained an active and committed servant of the Church.
The Diocese extended heartfelt condolences to his family, parishioners, and all those affected by the loss, assuring that funeral arrangements would be announced in due course.
“May his soul find eternal rest in the Lord,” the statement concluded.
