A 23-year-old hotel worker, Victoria Emmanuel, is battling severe burns after she was allegedly doused with boiling water by her colleague’s girlfriend in Kano.
The incident happened on November 10, 2025, in Kawo, where Victoria followed her co-worker, 28-year-old Shadrach Michael, to pick up items for her birthday preparations. Before they headed to the market, Shadrach suggested they stop briefly at his apartment.
According to Victoria’s sister, Rosemary, everything escalated when Shadrach’s girlfriend, Chioma Michael, called to say she was coming over. Despite his attempts to discourage her, Chioma arrived and met Victoria in the house.

Rosemary said Chioma claimed she wanted to take a warm bath and started boiling water. When the gas finished, she fetched more from a neighbour and continued heating it. Moments later, Chioma allegedly lifted the pot and poured the boiling water on Victoria, burning her face, chest, back and hands.
In shock, Shadrach reportedly struck Chioma as she fled the scene, allegedly taking Victoria’s phone. Rosemary added that Victoria was locked inside the apartment for nearly five hours without help before she was eventually taken to Abdullahi Wase Teaching Hospital and later to a clinic in Nomansland due to the absence of a doctor.
The incident was reported to the Hotoro Police Division around midnight. Police arrested Chioma’s mother to compel her appearance, and Chioma later turned herself in. The case has now been transferred to Bompai Police Headquarters.
Victoria is still receiving treatment and responding to care. A Magistrate Court in Kawaji has ordered Chioma’s remand at the Goron Dutse Correctional Centre until December 9, refusing her bail due to the severity of the charge; attempted culpable homicide, which carries a possible life sentence or death penalty.
