A British doctor has admitted to leaving a patient in the middle of surgery to have sex with a nurse in another operating room.
The incident, which took place in September 2023 at Tameside Hospital in Greater Manchester, resurfaced this week during a medical tribunal reviewing whether the doctor should be allowed to return to practice.
Dr. Suhail Anjum, 44, a consultant anaesthetist, told colleagues he needed a “comfort break” while a patient was undergoing gallbladder removal. He then walked into a nearby operating theater, where he was caught in a “compromising position” with a nurse, identified only as Nurse C.

A colleague discovered the pair but quickly left the room in shock. Dr. Anjum returned to his patient after about eight minutes and completed the procedure. No harm came to the patient.
The misconduct was later reported, leading to a General Medical Council (GMC) fitness-to-practice hearing. Dr. Anjum admitted the allegations, describing his behavior as “shameful” and apologizing to colleagues, the NHS trust, and the patient.
He explained that he was under immense personal strain at the time, citing marital difficulties and stress after the premature birth of his daughter. He insisted the incident was a “one-off error of judgment” and pleaded for a chance to continue his career in the UK.
