BREAKING: U.S. Revokes Wole Soyinka’s Visa — The Nobel Laureate Expresses Shock

Nobel laureate Prof. Wole Soyinka has revealed that the United States government has revoked his visa, barring his entry into the country for the time being.

Soyinka made the disclosure on Tuesday during a press briefing at Kongi’s Harvest Gallery, Freedom Park, Lagos, expressing surprise over the decision. “I have no visa; I am banned, obviously, from the United States. And if you want to see me, you know where to find me,” he told journalists.

According to him, the US Consulate in Lagos officially notified him in a letter dated October 23, 2025, stating that his B1/B2 non-immigrant visa had been revoked under US Department of State regulations. The reason, however, remains unclear.

Soyinka said he was still trying to understand what might have prompted the action, insisting he had no criminal history or record of misconduct. “I don’t have any past criminal record or even a misdemeanour to qualify for such revocation,” he said.

Earlier in September, Soyinka had declined an invitation from the Consulate for a visa re-interview, initially suspecting fraud. The revered writer maintained that his past relationship with US officials had always been cordial, describing the situation as “strange and unexpected.”
