The United States military has drafted a set of contingency plans for possible strikes in Nigeria following President Donald Trump’s order to prepare for “potential action” over alleged persecution of Christians.
According to The New York Times, the US Africa Command submitted three options to the Department of War: heavy, medium, and light—each outlining varying degrees of military involvement.
The “heavy option” includes deploying an aircraft carrier group to the Gulf of Guinea and launching airstrikes deep into northern Nigeria. The “medium option” proposes drone strikes on militant camps, while the “light option” focuses on partnering with Nigerian forces to combat Boko Haram and ISWAP insurgents.

Military sources cited by the Times said the plans aim to “protect Christians from armed violence and dismantle Islamist terror networks,” though several officials have warned that direct intervention could spiral into a prolonged conflict similar to Iraq or Afghanistan.
Trump had last week accused President Bola Tinubu’s administration of allowing the “mass slaughter of Christians,” designating Nigeria a Country of Particular Concern and suspending arms sales to the country. He warned that US military action could be “fast, vicious, and sweet.”
Analysts, however, note that the violence in Nigeria’s north is far more complex, involving ethnic, political, and land-based conflicts affecting both Muslims and Christians. Experts have also cautioned that deploying US forces to the region could worsen instability rather than resolve it.
